Re: House Trailer Build
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Ooops, hadn't logged in  Oh yeah, Stealth - I got the sheepswool insulation from http://www.blackmountaininsulation.com/index.php/conatact-information/contact-us who do trade in the US. It's insulating properties are not quite as good as fibre glass wool insulation, but it's bre...

It's too hot !!
I've just completed a re- fit in the wagon. Double glazed windows went in a few years ago. This month, much more insulation went in the roof and 2" cellotex under the floor. I've changed the furniture into a more succesful configuration too. So everything is ready for winter. It was already war...

Re: Wisdom in motion?
I've finally become aware of a class of nomadic homes called showman's wagons. Here is one of many good sites I've found: http://www.visit.carters-steamfair.co.uk/livingvans/livingvans.html Another variant is the living van, that would have been towed behind traction engines and steam rollers to ac...

Re: The Crib
I've been living full time in a similar sized unit for a few years now. My set-up is static, so seperate toilet and shower facilities plumbed into mains water and sceptic tank are used. So far as cooking operations go, I have an electric cooker. I have found that it is ok to use the oven and grill, ...

Re: diesel
Things are a bit worse in the uk. I've heard of diesel at GBP1.58 / litre at a motorway service station recently. I make that to be USD9.43 / US gallon at today's exchange rate

Re: The Beer Moth
That's an interesting take on the housetruck concept. I like how it can be opened up during good weather. The bowtop style gypsy horsedrawn wagons use felt insulation and canvas outer stretched over bent ash poles. The insulation properties of this set up are very good and the breathability of the f...

House Truck Pub on mainstream UK Television
It's more food than housetrucks. Jamie Oliver (the presenter) is a big deal over here in the UK, not sure if he is well known overseas. The truck looks to be an Army surplus Bedford 4 x 4. The open fire / oven looks good, but maybe wouldn't heat the floor area so well with it being so high up. Here'...

Re: Will it be a Housewagon?
My house wagon is timber framed. There isn't enough strength in the corners for sustained movement - it would pull apart. That was my biggest design fault. I have an aluminium sheet roof with a curved profile, which has worked well, especially as it allows for insulation thickness of 6" to 10&q...

How do you earn a living ?
I'm looking for some inspiration  My current line of work involves too many delays, can't do much work in the winter, and doesn't make enough money to enable me to buy my own place. I need to get some new ideas about work. And it's an interesting question to ask. I'm a self employed stonemason...

Condensation
Whether it's a small wooden structure like my own, or a large bus conversion, condensation is a problem. I thought it might be a good reference topic for people to add their ideas and experiences to. In my own case, I didn't even notice the problem last winter. This winter has been long and cold (by...

Copied and pasted from a British hunting site, a cheap and easy slow cooker recipe: Ok, peeps, 'By Popular Demand'; I use a Four Litre Slow Cooker. This gives me Two slap up, blow out Chicken Curries ..... Five or six chicken drumbsticks or eight or so wings. Five medium sized spuds. [potatoes] Two ...

Excellent site you have there JS. I've just skimmed through a few sections and agree wholeheartedly with the philosophy on living in small spaces - I employed similar (if rather less sophisticated) principles, and have been able to live well in the wagon I built. Will definitely be spending more tim...

Thanks Corwen, I had seen that Chapter 7 link before, but luckily things are ok on that front. From the looks of those sites, travellers in the UK have had it tough over the years. I was never part of any 'scene' or 'lifestyle' myself and have no inclination to live on the road. For me, living in th...

I would guess that the condensation problem will be an issue for the timber framing throughout your wagon because of the aluminium cladding. My guess would be to treat the timber with an appropriate preservative, and not worry about using hardwood framing. When I smashed up my old touring caravan to...
