Hi Rudy, what you might be thinking about on the lead pencil radio is a variation on the old, simple crystal radio. To my knowledge, this came about during WWII. It was called the foxhole radio. It was assumed that the operator (service man) had a headphone, a little bit of wire, and some large meta...

Hi folks, before I get started I have to say that Rudy is prodding me, so whatever happens here, it's his fault. The first 19 years of Carin's and my marriage were spent in the back house on the property that we still inhabit (living in the front house now) in Bellflower, California. Bob and Nancy (...

When I was in my 20s, my neighbour owned and drove a cross country rig equipped with a Detroit 6-71 and either a 4 or 5 X 3 gearbox (don't remember which). He used the clutch for 1st gear and backing up only. He got 330k+ miles out of the clutch. Not bad. I rode with him once and remember the shifts...

Rudy, I'm going to second guess on the number of "D" cells that the amplifier took. I remember now that many amps of that era ran on + and - 40 volts (not 45). If that is the case then the amplifier used a total of 54 "D" cells.

Hi Rudy, interesting story about the attack tom turkey. I have not had (fortunately) as much experience with this sort of bird as you. I do know a little about them though. The head changing colour is an emotional reaction, tom's heads will go from pale red to dark blue when excited or angered. The ...

Rudy, you are right in a "Manhattan" way. For batteries, my guess has been spent.

Hi Rudy, I know that this is a wild guess, but I would say 60 D cells for + and - 45 volts to power an amp like this. They would last about 4 hours cranking out 70 watts in continuous use. I have an older portable tube type short wave radio (Zenith Trans-Oceanic) that uses several batteries for oper...

Oops! Forgot the need for a tapered hole for a stream. I have an older type nozzle that is similar to the one your using, only it is about 6 inches in length. Problem is the threads are not too straight. There is difficulty in getting it on and off the the hose end. Still, would you be able to use a...

Sharkey, you mentioned using a cheap plastic nozzle that you could drill out. Just a thought.. how about a short piece of PVC with a cap that you drill with the hole size of your choice. Even less cost. Also, what about using an automotive type alternator. I recall that the one in my Geo was really ...

Hi Rudy, wonderful turkey in the trees shot. To bad that Mel Brooks used pigeons in his Alfred Hitchcock parody, High Anxiety instead of these guys. That truly would have had folks running.

Hi DB, sorry I got kind of off track about the tax issue. It bothers me that your property has lost approximately 40% and had the taxes double. It sounds like the property somehow got wrongly re-assessed or possibly identified for different usage (ie. as a rental or some kind of business that the st...

Hi DB and thank you for the concern. Actually an $80 increase is not so bad. In the past I've been unpleasantly surprised with $200+ increases. What gets me is how poorly our state manages their finances. If I ran my household in the same manner, I would have been on the streets a long time ago. Rig...

By the way Rudy, Carin and I are fans of Weird Al. Have gone to 5 of his concerts so far. He and his troop are a real class act. FYI he was discovered by a local radio personality named Dr. Demento. The good doctor's specialty is playing novelty tunes. He lives somewhat close to us. I once had the w...
