Keep the fairing, put on new shield, at least if you're planning more than about 1 hour trips. It may not look as elegant but it sure makes it easier to concentrate on the stuff around you and not your own discomfort. If you've gotta have elegance how about tractor seats? <g> My .02. Had an R50, Ear...

DF, > boys... Start easy so they have good feelings behind them when they get to the tough stuff. Just had a thought(!): It's _real_ hard to get back into most boats from in the water - even with assistance. It deserves serious thinking and maybe some mods (flip down ladder on the transom that you c...

I didn't know this until I had sailed for several years, but I now figure the most important piece of equipment in any boat after the running gear is at least one and better two good anchors (with good rode) - stored ready for quick use. Sometimes the shore plunges down too quick to find a holding b...

I read somewhere that detergent is _way_ oversold. Ie, you'd get 90% of the bang with no bucks at all - just water and agitation.

I'll try to tidy up a bit and shoot some area pics. I incline toward the view that a dock looks like a dock, usually, but what the hey. <g> > salt water... I learned to sail off Chicago on a summer whim racing. I found out about the importance of bulwarks - that's where you lodge (you hope) when the...

SF boat living

Seemed best to plunk this into a new topic. I've been here 30 years, so I don't notice the SF aura like I used to. Boat-wise, well, officially it's mostly illegal to live aboard around here, but... Avoid the Nazis and don't be an ass and things usually work OK. I like dock people, mostly. I spent a ...

> Suse... It does have "live" dvd. It uses KDE by default but includes Gnome and you can select it at install - swings both ways. <g> Actually I'm not totally sure the "live" version provides Gnome, but I think it does. I'll check with a friend who does installs all the time and ...

DualFuel, I'm gobsmacked! I guess you were doing lots of "work therapy" over there but it looks like a few other people benefited along the way. Hope some of them learned something. Great to hear how down home sense and skill can make a difference. My dad was a Marine in the Pacific; he ne...

Learning lessons is a Good Thing. 'Specially that kind when you all still got time. Play it quiet and smart though. I "started life" in '69 with a '64 Olds Dyanmic 88 wagon. Sounds a bit like the Galaxy. 11/1 compression, 2-barrel carb, might get 12mpg; it liked 85 and I kinda liked the in...

I use Suse 11.2. It's Big but it's the cleanest install (though some releases are better than others - this has been a good one). What printer do you have? I fixed one on a friends PC a while back, might have some links for you. I also drew up a diagram of the Linux sound system. I'll see if I can d...

Computers

A couple comments in different threads have ref'd computers a bit and one of Goodclue's about upgrading a laptop got me thinking a topic might possibly be in order. (I didn't notice one already out there.) In way of disclaimer, I worked corporate IT as programmer and systems analyst for 10 years but...

DEADLY combo = brake cleaner + welding

Posting this reminder cuz there's all-purpose handy people here, might get close to this combo.

DualFuel, no smarts here about the correct regulator. Just want to say I _strongly_ suspect you can't use one designed for an alternator, least not straight out of the box. The genny is wired different from an alternator.

FWIW
