I can tell you for a fact that the esters in vegetable oil attack and dissolve rubber, so if melting the top layer of a tire's sidewall is some kind of preservative measure, go for it. Otherwise, keep the sun off the tires and avoid climates that include a lot of ozone. Nothing lasts forever.

This probably deserves a topic of it's own, but I'll post here for brevity. Exaust Brakes: Exhaust brakes are nothing much more complicated than a throttle butterfly plate in the engine exhaust pipe. The one on my bus is just after the turbo and actuated by a pneumatic cylinder. The air supply to th...

" About dusk on the fifth day, we reached the top of Cajon Pass west of Barstow, California. Before retiring to the sleeping compartment, Dave had warned me against this thirty-five-mile stretch of mountainous down-grade. ‘Wake up Ford and me when you get to Kayhone Pass,’ I had understood ...

Now Dennis, don't stimulate Rudy's worry-wart genes. All systems lose air. The only problem is when they lose enough air that the leaks and normal brake application losses exceede the capacity of the compressor to keep up the pressure. Left sitting, you can expect your bus to gradually lose pressure...

That parabolic antenna will have quite a lot more gain than the simple waveguide antenna (cantenna) that you've been using. One thing to watch out for is that these antennas tend to get waterlogged and quit working. the feedhorn at the end of the rectangular standoff has a black plastic "tee&qu...

Rudy, you ~are~ keeping those 8D engine staring batteries charged regularly, aren't you? There is no excuse for allowing batteries to die due to self-discharge. Think of them and expensive electric pets. You have to feed and care for them of they will curl up in the corner and die.

Spring brakes? I have air brakes. No, you have air-actuated spring brakes. In order to understand how air brakes work, you should go download the Bendix Air Brake Handbook and read through it. Your rear brakes have two cannisters nested one on top of the other, one pair each at the ends of the rear...

Q1: Your brake lights come on because they are activated through the air pressure system. Putting the brakes in "Park" is the same as mashing down the brake pedal hard, so the brake light switch supplies power to the lights. Defeating this is not a trivial task, you'd have to rewire the bu...

Rudy, if those batteries havn't been charged in two years, do yourself a favor and haul them to a recycler and get rid of them. Expect to be paid $4-8 apiece for them, maybe more, depending on commodity prices. Dead lead acid batteries will ~never~ recover from such abuse. Any apprent revival will b...

I don't know what the Tinypic policy is on image life, but I can tell you that it's not limitless. It's even more embaras...
