Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Mark, you got my curosity up. I weighed all the front end sheet metal and came up with a whopping 72 pounds!?! I figure that the rest of the framing won't weigh more than another 50 pounds for a total of about 120 pounds. Since I can still drag a 160# sand filled dummy the requsite 30 feet, the fron...

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Hello All. Thanks for the ideas and thoughts. Yes I always planned to tily the entire front end as it would be neat impossible to reach anything if the fenders were in their normal position unless I climbed around on them--shudder, shuder--all that new paint etc. I considered opening from the front ...

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Thanks for the replies guys. Dick, the Saab hood mechanism is just what I had in mind when I started this project, but unfortunately it can't produce enough lift to pass by the spring hangers before it binds at the top. Tango, as you recall did the front fenders lift with the hood or just the hood? ...

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Hello All. I spent the last couple of days thinking about the tilt front end for my bus. As usual my thinking includes paint stir sticks and masking tape. I tried multiple variations on the theme of "tilt hoods" as seen on so many custom pick-ups--but that just won't work. The problem is, ...

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Hello All. I sort of finished up the door this week-It'll have to wait now until I paint the whole bus before I get back to it. I've been thinking about a way to make the windows I'm blanking out still look like windows. I talked to a local paint vender about formulating a paint to make the blanks l...

Re: Another newbe

Thanks Dick. That sure is a great looking screen. Like you pointed out, I'd have to figure out a way to go around the pole and elbows at the back--your angle idea is food for thought. Jack

Re: Another newbe

Hey Somewhere, glad the run went well. You mentioned that your new screen door worked well and I recall that you designed your door stay to accomodate the screen but I can't seem to find a pic of the screen door and how it operates. I'm at the point where I'll need to be thinking about building a sc...

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Hello All, I was happily able to burn up a week's worth of free time completing my pneumatic door project (still have to do the finish work). I found a little rust here and there that had to be cut out and replaced but not too bad. Fortunately, both the doors and the opening were quite square; unfor...

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Hello all. Thanks for the input. Dusty, I'll have to see if I can find louvers that are "just right" or I'll go with the flat panel (maybe) Ha. Mark, these old school bus conversions are all cool and having someone come up to you and say "Wow, thats cool" has to be an important p...

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Hello All. Somewhere, thanks for the well expressed thought on the louvers--louvers it will be! For todays activity I decided that since the genny cover is mostly done, the "B" pillar repaired and the entry step repaired (welded) I had nothing more to keep me from completing the entry door...

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Hello All. Spring has arrived in So Cal. Sun up at 0600 ish and down at 1730 ish. 75 degrees with a lite breeze--I love it. I completed what I wanted to get done over the weekend. I even did a quick mock-up of the adjacent (to the genny cover) replacement panel and things seem to line up pretty good...

Hey Lostranger, Haven't heard from you for a while. Hope all is well. Seems my 2 yr project is still a 2 yr project. Hope I get it finished while I can still have some fun with it! Jack

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Hey Dick, you are right on both counts. Since both the genny input and output are remotely controlled I shouldn't have to be sliding the drawer in and out except for service. I considered a paino hinge affair but because I want to be able to use the gantry mounted to the side of the bus to remove th...

Re: 1935 Chevy school bus

Hello All. I don't know where my pics went in my last couple of posts. I'll try to figure it out later. I got to play with my bus all day today. Some time ago I put my genny in a pull out drawer on the side of the bus. Unfortunately, the space between the frame and the outer bus body left the genny b...

Re: remember this truck..?

I'd have never guessed that any of those oldies were still around. Got me flippin' through the pages of my copy of Rolling Homes and wondering if any others have survived. Jack
