Heading into my 8th? winter here, I would say that this is the heaviest I have seen snow so far. Generally it snows about three or four times a winter, but settles on the ground less than that.
The tropical looking plants that you are referring to are probably the young cabbage trees in the fourth photo down, which often tend to grow in swampy areas.
