Bacon Barley Soup

Post by Rudy »

A brand new invention. I just finished putting all the ingredients in. Pictures will be coming.

2 quarts beef broth

1lb sliced bacon cut into 2 inch pieces

1/2 cup barley

3 stalks celery sliced

30 baby carrots cut into thirds

3 cloves garlic diced

2 cups raw spinach cut into small pieces

1 tsp pepper

1 tsp curry powder.

I'm going to leave the crockpot on high.

Well, because of my ignorance, I made something that I must throw away. This batch gets two thumbs down.

The mistake I made was not frying the bacon and getting rid of the grease.
I just cut up the bacon and put it in the crockpot, fat and all.

It was like eating a bowl of grease.

The recipe is a good one EXCEPT, do not put raw bacon in there.

Some you win, some you lose.

You probably could have let it cooled, skimmed the grease off and then reheated. At least that way, you wouldn't waste the entire batch.

I kinda wondered when I read your original post. I thought that was a lot of fat going in.

Keep on trying, Rudy!

The crockpot is in the fridge. I looked inside it this morning. There is a layer of the fat on the top. I will skim it off and brave another bowl.

A friend gave me a package of cooked/dried bacon yesterday. It is what I will use next time.

I will give a report later to tell you if I managed to save this current soup.

What was I thinking to put that raw bacon fat in there? I thought that maybe it would disappear.

It's all science experiments to me. Luckily, most of my experiments are successful.

Hmmm! A delicious « canadian» soup

Like Asian: «soupe repas» with rice noodle, pork, chicken, shrimp and vegetable.

Delicious!
