Yangtze 18

Post by stuartcnz »

A lot of years ago, I discovered this 18 foot design, and it appealed to me immensely.

I even bought the plans. Unfortunately the design was never actually completed and there are still some things that need tidying up to make it a functional design. It is based on the 18 foot Super Pelican, which is based on the 16 foot Great Pelican, which is based on the 12 foot San Francisco Pelican; all designed by the late Bill Short.

Someone has built a model with there own modifications.

And it looks like they have embarked on building a full size version.

I still dream about building one of these, one day, and have put a lot of thought on how I would finish the design. One thing I would definitely do different is the rig. I would use a cambered Hasler/McLeod junkrig, based on Arne Kverneland's modifications. I would also, more than likely go with leeboards, using some of Phil Bolgers methods of mounting them, rather than the centreboard, as designed.

Will I ever get around to doing it? who knows! but at the very least I would like to build a functioning scale model, and in the mean time just dreaming about it works pretty well too.

The boat in the above photo's is now for sale, according to the following Yahoo group post, which also includes links to current photo's.

Hi Folks,
I have a custom Yangtze Pelican for sale. Boat has been an on-going project cut
short by the development of a severe epoxy allergy and a neck injury. I can't
finish it and am looking for a good home for 'PUFFIN'.
Boat is largely complete and comes with aluminum mast in tabernacle, junk rig
sail (requires rigging and fitting of included battens), heavy duty custom
trailer, and large, kick-up rudder. Based on Captain Short's plans, this hull
uses a half keel forward with double after skegs and a forward mounted dagger
board arrangement as per classic sampan. Also has wet-well in center cockpit for
outboard motor. Many custom features including forward cabin with double bunk,
large center cockpit with below deck storage, and comfortable after cabin set up
as galley. Heavily built using West System Epoxy over plywood. I think that this
hull is the most boat you can compress into 18 feet and has endless potential. I
just regret it can't be me to finish and enjoy it. I am truly more interested in
the boat finding a good Pelican and junk rig fan than how much money I can get
for it. Open to reasonable offers. Located in Victoria, BC. If interested please
