Diesel/LPG ether substitute

Greetings,
Ether will spontaneously combust at a much lower temp than diesel so it has been used as a starting aid; often with disastrous results if misused.
I've heard, second hand, of using LPG as a starting aid and after reading the 'fumigation' chronicles wonder about maybe venting a nice puddle of gas into the intake manifold as a cold weather starting aid for an old diesel.
Any personal experience opinions or suggestions out there?
