I was in a department store here in Japan the other day and saw these new bicycles that Sanyo and Panasonic are selling now.

They have a NiMH pack in the frame and a hub mounted direct drive motor/alternator in the front wheel. When you press the button on the handlebars you get some electric assist from the front wheel drive for going up hills but when braking or decelerating or going down hill it charges the battery. The pedals drive the usual chain and rear wheel gubbins from an ordinary bike.

You can see some pictures and stuff here but the text is Japanese.

Additionally, they have started selling two longer range types of bicycle with 5Ah and 10Ah Li-ion Mn (some new kind of magnesium battery?) packs. Otherwise the same as the NiMH based ones.
