There's a feature in Nature about a new type of Lithium ion battery that can be charged and discharged in 20 seconds! The problem with traditional lithium cells was apparently the substrate used to hold the lithium. A materials scientist has found a way to improve this so that the charge / discharge current potential greatly increased.

Should be good to go as a technology in 2-3 years as it does not require any radical changes to the way LiFePO4 cells are made now.

At first small cells for mobile phones are targeted but the cells have tremendous application in hybrid vehicles where there's a lot of peak energy to be harvested in braking, if you can get the battery to accept it as fast as it is generated.

It would also allow EVs to be charged at the same rate as petrol re-fueling at stations (if you could get enough Amps at the "nozzle" - a whole other problem...)
