Dusty, you always have such great photos to share. Your four wheeling adventures remind me of the thread called Phil's Military Volvo in the bus barn forum.

Dusty- I am SO jealous of your DIESEL 'Cruiser! :)

And with all the goodies you have on it- and the great country and scenery on your trips- I don't think anything could get any better for you!!

Thanks for your positive comments guys.

Another trip , more mud/boulders/water , LOL , nothing broken , actually , I never broke any part of the truck in all the off roading I did . However , the same cannot be said for the landrovers on the trips , axles , U bolts , axles , pinions, axles, chassis cracks , axles , LOL .
We always had fun , even if we did sometimes have extended smoko stops , in the middle of the creek!! while some poor Landy owner dealt with the latest drama.

This long weekend we headed up the Rakaia river to the Mathias River. This involved crossing the Wilberforce , often a challenge as it floods real fast in the slightest of bad weather.

On the Rakaia River

We got over the Wilberforce , and it started to rain ,, a couple of hours further up the track and the rain is sleeting , , nearing the Mathias we find it impassable , so head back just a little to a musterers hut , 8 bunks and a coal range , nothing else. We decide to stay the night and see what the weather brings us in the morning .
There were at least 10 trucks on the trip , so not everyone could sleep in the hut .
The hardy few elected to tent around the few trees.

Then it snowed.

OK , so we were OK in the hut

The evening got much cooler!

In the morning , Marcus (being a Swiss mountain man) ran up the hill behind the hut .
He came down saying , "I have the good news and the bad news, the good news is , I can see the Rakaia, the bad news is , there is only one crossing !!"

The Rakaia at that place is about 1 mile wide.

That's a heck of a lot of water .

We decided to stay another day and wait for the river to go down.

Contacted the folks back home via the 'mountain radio'. GREAT Service.

Next morning was bright and clear , and a little white. So we made tracks.

Whilst the flow in the Rakaia had gone down LOTS, it was still far from docile. As you can see , This guy had to wind his drivers window up to stop the water from flowing in!

That looks like a lot of fun. Sure is beautiful too. It's hard to imagine the size of the peaks in the background. You guys look like tiny dots in front of them.

So I've just had a couple of weeks away in the bus , nice autumn holiday , weather was warm and mostly dry , in fact , it was so warm I hardly got to light the range at all. Best I got to do was a casserole one night and some pastry things another night. I'll put some pics up later , after I get thru these ones first....

Back to the back country 8)

There is a great area , not too far from me , that is the junction of the Harper and Avoca rivers

Image

Pretty remote , so few people go near it.

Image

We camped in the only sheltered area for miles

Not that there was much shelter , the wind can fair HOWL thru here..

Image

But despite the occasional breeze , and the excitement when the river flooded  we enjoyed the place over several trips.

After a while , the SWB 'cruiser was not big enough , so I bought an older wagon , fitted a chev v8 for better economy 8) and learned to drive again.

Here we are in the Waipara Gorge , very interesting limestone formations.

walking thru the gorge to check for a suitable route

On an earlier trip,, Driving by Man with rope to tow drowned landrovers :D

dburt, there are a lot of old homes with windows like this here, they used to be very cheap in the demo yards, and are popular items to install in a H/truck. :)

Back to the time line....

Back on the West coast , the native Beech forest is fabulous scenery and a great driving experience.

Sometimes a little track maintenance was in order.

After several years of REALLY great trips in to the Lake Daniels area , staying at Thompsons Flat , we heard that the farmer (Mr Thompson) was selling the Flat (110 hectares) and Timberlands was interested .

We were worried!

The timber company would plant the flat out in pine trees and restrict access. All bad news.

Several of the guys were very clever and devised a way to keep the great 4WD trip open.

Wilderness Lands Co. was formed and we bought the land ! 8) .

A new hut has been built at the start of the flat and a small gate fee is charged to cover the rates (land tax) etc. Stuff the big business eh!
