Yes , well , it will probably take some of the people there , a couple of days to get over the party ....
Nice that the kids bought the coffee caravan , and the lights , and another friend bought the vardo stage , and the live music was great .

Great pics Dusty! I like the Coffee wagon- "Coffeeufeel" as in "Coffee you can feel"! Wow, that must be strong coffee! We call that "Cowboy Coffee" around here. So thick you have to carve a chunk outa the pot with your pocket knife! A real "Kaffein Kick" :!:

I sure like the old hippie-style house trucks and buses with the stained glass windows, lots of carvings, shingles, etc!

The park where you folks camped has alot of what we call Ponderosa pine trees. Reminds me of lots of parks in the Pacific Northwest. Sure wish I could afford to come visit NZ. Everyone I have ever known who visited over there said it was fantastic, a must see!

The following weekend the Gypsy Fair gathered in Bromley park. This guy did the most amazing fret work , but I wasn't able to photograph it ...

I know some of you readers are into music.

As a teenager I attended one of the first significant music festivals here , at Ngaruwahia, about 1973.
15000 people were there, Black Sabbath played , you could hear them clearly 3km away in the village. :) I was with a friend , in a borrowed car , and had arranged to meet another friend at the venue.
Well ......... how do you find one person in all that lot ,, especially when there were so many other things to look at .. LOL ..
After 3 days without food (the 3rd friend had the money) ,, we drove into Hamilton and slept in the car by the lake , in the morning, we were woken by 'quack quack'..... bloody hell.. wheres the silencer .... shaking hands .... phut! .. quick ,, into the boot ,, back to the festival ,, plucked the carcase down by the river .. rapid construction of fire and spit , ............ darn , it was SO hard waiting for the duck to cook . NOTHING has ever tasted so good :)
Eventually found the friend with the money :)

Later in 1979 another venue , Nambassa festivals were very successful with vast (for NZ) crowds of 65000. Remember we only had a population of 3million at that time.

So I was cruising Utube the other day and discovered some cool NZ history.

This SO gets me going again .. amazing how I was apparently such a blinkered young person , I thought I hardly remembered any of the detail ,, just images of atmosphere . LOL . ahhh , but to see this stuff on screen .......... 8)

OK, lets go on a different trip. This time I took the truck.

So there is this guy who sold his farm and retired.

He has a passion for steam.

So he built a shed 8) 8)

A few of us went for a trip to his "shed opening" .

The trip involved about 1000kms of travel. We went thru the secondary roads where possible , copped some really cold weather (snow), had to turn back because of road slips (BIG detour) and generally had a ball.

Near the start , the road and rail are close , nice view today.

Image

Yep, heading for those snowy peaks .....

Image

We went to Hanmer , then planned to go via the Rainbow up to St Arnaud, but the road was out , so we back tracked and traveled via the Lewis Pass,

Image

Then over the Maruia saddle (of infamy in another thread)

Image
Image

4km up and 7km down , very pretty , full concentration required all the time , and me stupid enough to take the bus over here years before

Once we got over the pass and back into the center of the island , we stopped for a break at a tiny country school , the kids all came out and learned about our cars and stuff .

Image

Back on the road , the weather had cleared lots at this end of the island.

Image

In fact , if it wasn't for the bloody -5 wind chill , you might have thought it was summer .. LOL .

Some silly sod parked the boat on the hard stuff and left it there.

Image

So ,, over the hill and down into Takaha.

Image

Yep , all the way down there

Image

Keep yer eyes on the road :)

Image

Brakes ,, ??? ,, what brakes ..

Image

Ahhhhh ,, flat ground again .

Right , purpose for the trip .............. the nice new Steam Shed.

As you would expect , he had gathered a few items together , done some restoration and made things work.

Image

Image

But the thing I loved the most , was the restored Traction Engine. The owner was a pedantic perfectionist and had discarded everything that was worn , and had a new part made each time .
Yep , NEW traction engine , the family spent hours driving up and down the road to the beach. It was stunning , totally quiet , smooth, almost ethereal, if you can imagine a bunch of whirling steel parts being ethereal ? :D 8)
