Had a friend once named Marvin who was a traveling logger with a helicopter logging outfit, and he wanted his wife and kids near him, so he built a rather nice trailer home into a semi-trailer to take along on the road. It was all self contained of course, with large gen set, washer-dryer, huge fresh water and holding tanks, propane, etc- they could go for a quite a spell out in the woods before they needed fresh water or propane. They also had a nice big 5th wheel RV the wife pulled behind thier one-ton Ford pickup. If it was rainy out in the woods on the job, the kids had lots of room to play indoors in the trailer, and if Marv and his wife wanted quiet time, they could banish the kids to the big playhouse. Marv pulled the semi-trailer with a semi-truck to the different jobs, and had large storage sections under the floor of the trailer for tool storage. It was not something you wanted to take off road tho! And as the old song goes, it may take 40 acres to turn that rig around!

I was there in November and saw that rig. Hopefully next winter I'll get to knock on the door.
Where you ask?
Slab City.

Converting a single wide mobile home to fifth wheel would be a cheap way to go, but I just imagine the homebuilt one pictured is built more robust than a mobile home would be. Pretty cool idea. I was thinking there was a post on this site a long time ago from a fellow that was building a fifth wheel. I wonder if this is the same guy?
