I like the way they hold the tinny camper on the tray, a couple of ratchet straps and call it good...

These vehicles have the ultimate in macho appeal, and are the right tool for the off-road job, but I wonder if you'd get a little wistful for some creature comforts after driving more than couple of hundered miles in a day, every day?

The guys on Steel Soilders are always talking about how loud the turbo's are..Most wear hearing protection. You can change seats, insulate the cab, put mufflers on, etc.. The longer/bigger your truck is, the more restricted your travels becomes. Can't beat them for beefy-ness..Mileage is 6-10mpg if good.. The M35 has a 12'bed, the M36 has a 17' bed... I drove them during the Viet era in the USA for the Air Force. Great vehicles, go anywhere. Deep mud and snow still bogged them down due to lugs filling..
They are relatively cheap though...

Wittenberg converted mil-spec vehicles to commercial spec.

I am not sure exactly what all they did but the most noticeable difference is the front clip was made into a one-piece fiberglass tilt unit. Cab refinements were made as well.

I am thinking that a Wittenberg conversion may not have the same problems a mil-spec surplus unit might have. But it would have the same off road ability the mil-spec units have.

Just a thought I had.

Hercules + turbo "whistler" = deaf quick. I think it's the B-model turbo that got the "whistler" name, and the C-model that isn't as bad for the turbo noise.

Love these old trucks. They go anywhere, and carry anything.

They are loud.

They are heavy.

They are slow.

But they sure are COOL!

If you can find one, there is a model out there that already has a nice cab overhang double slide-out shell on its back.

here's a few pic's from the Idaho Motor Pool.. The problem is that these sides don't slide out, they fold out which prevents you from anything mounted except in the middle section..
