Russian Stove
In the Russka, by Edward Rutherfurd, he describes a wood stove, used to heat early Russian houses. I can't find that particular passage in the book right now, but when I do, I will put it up here. They just sound so homely and for the coldest of winters too.

Re: Russian Stove
Masonry stoves are awesome! If it weren't for the weight I'd build one in my truck.

Re: Russian Stove
Along a similar vein is the Rocket Mass Heater, made with Adobe. These are starting to look more practical to me, as they are easier to build yourself, and are probably safer in an earthquake area, without the mass of bricks that Russian Stoves have.
Notice that in the photo below, the thermal mass is formed into seating around the side of part of the room.

Re: Russian Stove
If I could figure out a way to do it I would most certainly build a rocket stove in my truck, complete with the bench to put my mattress on.
