Re: Adventures in web community infrastructure

To answer your question backwards, I haven't been using Hostgator for quite some time. If you haven't run a web site before, they are a reasonable choice. I found up time to be good, as was customer service. Any of those type of hosts, are going to be on shared hosting plans, which means computing r...

Re: Adventures in web community infrastructure

To start with, a bit of forum infrastructure history is in order. (part one) In the beginning, there was a website called mrsharkey.com. This web site was " The Net’s largest compendium of information relating to House Buses and House Trucks. " In 2004 Sharkey decided to add some software ...

Adventures in web community infrastructure

Given the ups and downs that this forum has experienced, on the technical side. I have decided that it needs to be rebuilt from the ground up, under a completely new architecture. This thread is for documenting the journey. It maybe a long ride; probably with some side excursions, and it will defini...

Re: Missing Photo's?

Yep you have it exactly right. There are no photo's hosted on the forum. Mostly that is a carry over from when Sharkey first started the forum. He had very limited server storage space, available to him. I have carried that on, which makes hosting the forum very easy from a resource point of view. S...

Re: Missing Photo's?

I'm looking forward to seeing your farm stuff. About nomadichome.org. I am surprised about what you received with your iphone. At some point I will have to look into it. As for photo hosting sites, I don't really know what is out there. I used to use photobucket, but haven't put anything on there fo...

Re: Solar Electric VW RV

What I found interesting about this project, was the deliberate use of lead acid batteries, instead of the newer technologies. And the reason for doing so.

It is on the same server as the forum, but is a totally different site. to use it, you have to sign up at https://friendica.nomadicista.org My understanding, is that social media, sort of grew out of forums/message boards, in concept, but was more oriented around personal connections, like family an...

Like social networking? Dislike the central pervasive control of Facebook? I'm not that interested in social networking, outside of forums, and traditional means, such as meeting face to face, or email. However many people these days, are hooked on centralized social networking. As an alternative, t...

Re: Pass word

No reason you couldn't go back to using a couple of tin cans and a piece of string. You just need to find someone to hold the other end. :D

Oh yeah, the network effect. :banghead: Might be easier said than done.

Re: We are moving!

A bit of an update: The move wasn't as smooth as I had hoped. In fact the new server failed catastrophically. The latest forum backup I had, was from seven days earlier. So I have rebuilt the forum on a new server, hopefully with better results than the last one. On the upside, there wasn't much act...
