Cut a few bacon rashers in 1/2" slices and fry - not crisp but well done. Pour off the grease (save it for pastry) and add a load of home grown tomatoes. A can, juice and all, will do at a pinch. Add pepper (no salt) and simmer until liquid is reduced by half.
This is from back in the days of "wooden ships and iron men" ... it's probably been replaced with omelette and melba toast.
