We are moving!

Post by stuartcnz »

The time has arrived, for the forum to move to a new server.

I expect the move to happen over the next week or so. I am currently preparing the new server.

A couple of things to note about the move. Firstly, I will shutdown the forum during the move, so as, to make sure we don't lose any posts during the transition. Will probably be for about 24-48 hours.

Secondly, the forum will only be available at nomadicista.org. I will be shutting off all other domain name access.

When I start the move, I will leave a place holder, to let people know that the move is taking place, with an ETA on when it will be running again.

We are currently halfway through the move.

Database and software has been migrated.

We are now waiting on the DNS migration, then we will see if I have the server configuration setup correctly. If not, it may take a little longer for everyone else to find there way back in.

We made it! :D

There will be times when the site may take longer to load now, but the trade off, is that the sites future should be more secure now than it has ever been!

Also I have now included the option to access the site with https, eg https://nomadicista.org which I recommend using. At least for logging on, as it means your passwords will be sent in encrypted form, rather than as plain text. For the moment I have also left unencrypted access open eg http without the s, but may change that at a later date.

A bit of an update: The move wasn't as smooth as I had hoped. In fact the new server failed catastrophically.
The latest forum backup I had, was from seven days earlier.

So I have rebuilt the forum on a new server, hopefully with better results than the last one.

On the upside, there wasn't much activity on the forum, between the last backup, and the server going down. On the downside, we did get a new member, who looked quite active, and their membership was lost in the rebuild. Hopefully they will sign up again.

This time around I have made https the default, so users passwords will always be sent in encrypted form now.
